The pattern is familiar in every industry we work with. A custom PHP application was built six or eight years ago, it works, and it quietly became the system the business depends on. Then the original developer moves on. There is no documentation, no repository, no staging copy — just files on a cPanel shared hosting account, edited directly over FTP. Nobody dares change anything, so nothing gets changed, and the risk compounds silently.
Underneath, the problems are specific and fixable. Deprecated functions that stop the code running on PHP 8. Bespoke core PHP with no framework looks cheaper on the quote and costs more over five years, because routing, validation, authentication and security all get reinvented and none of it is documented.
